Prayer for Night Terrors

Introduction

If you have been experiencing nightmares, insomnia, or other attacks on your sleep, emotions, body, and peace of mind, this resource is for you.

What many call the "spirit realm" is far more vast than people realize, but the Holy Spirit is willing to guide you into all truth (John 16:13). Our first and foremost help as believers is God Himself, who helps us see according to truth. One of the common tactics of fallen spirits is to deceive people into wrong focuses and false understandings (2 Corinthians 11:14).

Before moving forward, be willing to allow God Himself to teach you, leading you into victory through Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57). Read this with a humble heart, willing to receive His inspiration, and with your Bible open, so that you can study and receive the freedom of the Living Word through Jesus. The following points are an invitation to humble yourself before the Lord so you can receive His perfect help (James 4:10).

Our prayer is that the Holy Spirit will give you revelation of how to pray in accordance to the Word of God, and see victory in your life!

The Reality of Spiritual Warfare

We are all on a battlefield. Jesus taught that as we follow Him, there is a place of peace in Him even amidst chaos (John 14:27). Many people are unaware of the spiritual warfare happening around them. The silver lining of having an unpleasant experience, such as night terrors, is that you are aware that something needs to be confronted (Ephesians 6:12). Many harden themselves against conviction, discernment, and spiritual senses (1 Timothy 4:1-2).

Growing in the Lord’s Authority

As we grow in Christ, we learn to receive His guidance moment by moment (John 10:27). We are His body, with authority (Luke 10:19). To be effective, we must align with His power and will. Jesus instructed us to be watchful and prayerful (Matthew 26:41), and to remain vigilant because our enemy seeks to devour (1 Peter 5:8).

Yes, Jesus is victorious, but we are also more than conquerors through Him (Romans 8:37). Jesus declared that the gates of hell would not prevail against His Church and that He has given us the keys to the kingdom (Matthew 16:18-19). Christ is the head of the Church, and all things are under His feet (Ephesians 1:22-23).

Exercising Spiritual Authority

Jesus sent out the disciples with power and authority over evil spirits (Luke 9:1). However, He warned them not to rejoice in that power, but rather in the security of their salvation (Luke 10:20).

We do not exercise authority through emotions or mere repetition of words, but by faith in God (Mark 11:22-23). Faith is a substance from God (Hebrews 11:1) and is strengthened as we abide in Christ (John 15:5). Our authority in Christ is real, and spirits must obey when we command them in Jesus’ name (Philippians 2:9-10).

Living in Faith and Obedience

You were saved by faith (Ephesians 2:8), and miracles happen by faith (Mark 5:34). Anything that contradicts righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit is not from God (Romans 14:17). Faith is not conjured up through emotional exertion; it is already in you (Romans 12:3).
We must believe God’s Word and act accordingly (James 1:22). Jesus taught that whatever we bind on earth is bound in heaven, and whatever we loose on earth is loosed in heaven (Matthew 18:18).

Understanding Spiritual Attacks

Even when Jesus was on earth, evil spirits tried to interfere (Matthew 4:1-11). If you experience oppression or night terrors, it does not mean you are weak. Instead, it can be an opportunity to grow in spiritual strength (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).

Avoiding Open Doors to the Enemy

The enemy seeks footholds to wear us down (Ephesians 4:27). This can happen through:
  • Reacting in the flesh instead of the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-17)
  • Entertaining wrong thoughts (2 Corinthians 10:5)
  • Engaging in sinful behaviors (1 John 3:8)

The Lord wants to protect us, but we must actively choose His ways (Psalm 91:14-16). If there are open doors in your life, ask the Lord to reveal them (Psalm 139:23-24).

Common Causes of Spiritual Night Attacks

  1. A spiritual attack due to your faithfulness in Christ – The enemy may target you because you are making an impact (Ephesians 6:10-11).
  2. Personal compromise – Engaging in sinful activities can open doors to attacks (James 4:7-8).
  3. Spiritual contamination from others – Being around someone influenced by an evil spirit can affect you (2 Corinthians 6:14-15).
  4. Witchcraft and spiritual opposition – Spiritual warfare can manifest through direct attacks from the enemy (Acts 16:16-18).

How to Respond to a Spiritual Attack

If you experience a night terror or spiritual oppression:
  • Turn to God immediately – He is already with you (Psalm 46:1).
  • Repent if needed – Align yourself with God’s truth (1 John 1:9).
  • Worship and declare His Word – Darkness flees in the presence of true worship (Psalm 22:3).
  • Command evil spirits to leave – Use your authority in Christ (Mark 16:17).
  • Immerse yourself in God’s presence – Read Scripture, pray, and listen to worship music (Philippians 4:8-9).

Living a Spirit-Led Life

God desires that we grow in abiding in Him (John 15:4-7). Daily surrender your life, family, and all areas of stewardship to Him (Proverbs 3:5-6). He will lead you in every moment (Isaiah 30:21).

As you receive His guidance, your mind is guarded (Philippians 4:7). Pray to understand who you are in Christ (Ephesians 1:17-19). You are victorious in Him (Romans 8:31). The enemy is already defeated and will one day be thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10).

Final Encouragement

God wants you to be Spirit-led, not just bound by principles and routines (Romans 8:14). Prayer is about alignment with Him (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Just as Peter prayed before raising the girl from the dead (Acts 9:40), we must stay connected to God to be ready to move in faith.
You are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37). Keep your focus on Jesus, and know that He has already given you victory (John 16:33).
